Dyslexia Engineer was created to assist parents in their journey with educating their child. There are many different stages when parents need assistance in the educational process. They may feel stuck, that there are no options, or not understanding why the teachers don't have all the answers. Some parents are finding out for the first time that their child is Dyslexic and do not know what that means. You may have finally gotten the diagnosis and need to get your child help in school - needing direction. You may have been told you need an I&RS meeting - and don't know what that means. There are others that have had an IEP in place and one's child is still struggling to stay above grade level searching for alternative options. You may have been told that your child may 'seem dyslexic' off the record - now what? Some parents are just looking for additional accommodations in a new school, grade level, class or subject. Here are some key tips for staying organized :

ALWAYS have an agenda - whether you are meeting with a teacher, setting up an IEP, finalizing a 504 it is imperative that you have goals for each meeting. These are goals for you and your child, not the school or the teacher. Be clear about the expectations you want to accomplish at your meeting.
Know what you need - Do not walk into any school meeting blind. Do not expect the school or the teachers to give you the pathway you need for your child. You need to have an idea of exactly what to ask for within the walls of your district.
Know your local laws - Print out and bring with you your local state laws that have passed within your state. Some areas are not familiar with exactly what the new laws may entail. Be sure to understand your rights under the law.
Do NOT be afraid - The school should be working in conjunction with you to educate your child. Remember it is a partnership that is supposed to support the child in the least restrictive environment. Working together with the district will enable a cohesive partnership in the best interest of the child.
